Slow Food Nation San Francisco:
The Cowgirl Perspective

San Francisco's Fort Mason and Civic Center Plaza were transformed over Labor Day weekend.  Slow Food Nation 2008 was welcomed in by unusually balmy Bay area weather and by an enthusiastic crowd of 60,000 who came together to celebrate American foods.

At the cheese pavilion, 75 cheese-loving volunteers welcomed long lines of people into our straw bale corral to taste unique artisan American cheeses and meet the cheesemakers who created them.  The opportunity to personally connect with small cheesemakers, many of whom only sell their cheese at the farm location, was a real treat for the participants and volunteers alike.

Fall Cheese Collections

The California Classics Collection

There's no doubt about it, American artisan cheesemakers are our heroes. Our Fall cheese collections were inspired by the principles of Slow Food Nation; supporting food that is good, clean and fair. We will add the word 'delicious' to that list.

The California Classics Collection features cheeses three northern California cheesemakers, each of whom has been a trailblazer in their own uique way.   From Ig Vella - who has carried on the cheesemaking tradition started by his father in 1931, to Mary Keehn – celebrating 25 years of goat milk cheesemaking, to Cowgirl Creamery -  where the rich dairy traditions of rural West Marin inspired Sue Conley and Peggy Smith  to create organic cheese using the milk from the Straus Family Dairy in Marshall.
