Buche by Pierre Kolish

Located on the high desert plains of western Oregon, Juniper Grove Farm rests in the shadows of the Cascade range. The region is blessed with rich soils, lush alfalfa and clean water from the mountain snowmelt. A native of Portland, Pierre Kolish was drawn to this productive agricultural land after spending time as a cheesemaking apprentice in Normandy, France in 1985. There he learned to make farmstead Camembert under the tutelage of France's last traditional raw milk Camembert producer, Francois Durand.

Pierre returned to the states to establish his own farm in 1987 and has been making small batches of elegant farmstead goat cheese ever since. His beautiful Buche pays homage to an ancient French cheese known as Sainte Maure. It has a long straw slipped through the center that serves to hole the tender curds together as well as ventilate the creamery interior.

"Juniper Grove Farm remains a simple, hardworking farm, run by a close-knit group of Oregonians who love cheese, love animals and take pride in a job well done." junipergrovefarm.com

Red Hawk

Red Hawk's a Winner!

Our jubilant Cowgirl cheesemaking crew out at the Point Reyes creamery will be making extra batches of Red Hawk for the fall season, thanks to an unexpected increase in orders after our big win. Our beautiful triple-cream, washed-rind cheese with the orange-red tint won two ribbons at the annual American Cheese Society competition; first place in the Washed Rind category and runner-up in overall Best in Show. There were over 1,300 entries from the USA, Canada and Mexico from 197 cheesemakers. For a list of all of the winners, contact cheesesociety.org.

Win a Julia Cheese Collection!

American artisan cheese is one of the stars of the recently released film, Julie & Julia. In one scene, Julie, a lead character, is shopping for the evening meal at a New York City specialty food store. The camera quickly passes over three American cheeses in the case, each with an easily identifiable label. Our own Peggy Smith's trained cheese hunting eye identified the labels immediately. Can you?

The first five of you who correctly identify the three 'starring' cheeses will win a complimentary Julia Cheese Collection with all three cheeses plus one bonus cheese. Send your entry to mailorder@cowgirlcreamery.com or simply reply to this email.

The Julia Cheese Collection will be for sale on our website as soon as the winners of our contest are announced.
