Seasonal Cheeses

Spring at
Cowgirl Creamery means saying “hello” to ST PAT and
“farewell” to our winter cheese. Mother Nature plays a big part in
determining our seasonal Spring cheese. Winter brings lots of rain
in Point Reyes, which nourishes the stinging nettles that define the
local creek beds. The prickly leaves are wrapped around the soft ST
PAT rinds when they come out of the brine, leaving space for the
fluffy white mold to grow between the leaves. The first batch of ST
PAT for the season will be available in our shops and online on
March 17th.
Safekeeping Your Cheese
We
are often asked about the best way to store your cheese. Wrapping
the cheese in paper is rule #1 but then what? Our cheesemongers put
their heads together and came up with a design for a cheese safe
that would fit easily into the refrigerator. We then turned to our
friends at Texas Basket and they have crafted the perfect Cheese
Safe with a convenient sliding top and the image of a curious mouse
branded on top. We will send the Cheese Safe to you along with ten
sheets of cheese paper and some tips on caring for cheese.

New Petaluma Creamery
Opens
In late
February, Cowgirl Creamery proudly began making cheese in a beautiful creamery along
the banks of the Petaluma River and the first few batches of MT TAM
look lovely. Thanks to all of the brilliant and tireless folks that
helped to make it happen.
California
Artisan Cheese Guild
Cheesemaking is a solitary pursuit so there
are few opportunities for cheesemakers to know each other. In the
spirit of the Renaissance craft guilds, cheese makers in most
regions in the United States have created collaborative networks for
the purpose of exchanging knowledge and information. There is the
Maine Cheese Guild, the Southern Cheesemakers Guild and the Oregon
Cheese Guild, just to name a few. Last year, our state’s
cheesemakers officially launched the California Artisan Cheese
Guild. You can learn more about the Guild by visiting their
website.
The Guild is sponsoring two events in
March that promise to be fun and educational, too.:
-
California Artisan Cheese Guild
Dinner at Nick's Cove – Thursday, March 6th
-
