Eric from Pug's Leap and 9-day-old "Squirt"

For comfort when I milk the goat
I lean my forehead on her side.
From there by the barn I can see down
through the sinking evening air
to the pond
where the sunset has brought
trails of haze up from the water.
That's a form of love: drops of water floating
in breath, the goat's or mine,
or the steam from her hot milk in the dish.

No matter what breed, goats begin "kidding" in the spring. After a winter break, the frisky Alpines, the long-eared Nubian and the earless LaMancha, begin bearing kids in the spring. The Swiss Sannans and Toggenburgs along with the beautiful red Overhasli, give milk in the spring, just after the kids are born.

Cavallo Point
Just over the Golden Gate Bridge lays a historic part of the Golden Gate National Parks – Fort Baker. In an innovative public/private partnership, the historic colonial buildings at Fort Baker are undergoing a transformation that will house Cavallo Point – a lodge and conference center that will open this coming summer.

As part of their inaugural Culinary Program Series, Cavallo Point will be offering a 5 day program, August 17 - 22:
Artisan Cheesemaking with Cowgirl Creamery. Cowgirl Creamery owners and founders, Sue Conley and Peggy Smith, will cover all aspects of artisan cheese; how it is made and aged, classifications of cheese, serving and pairing cheese. They will be joined by Albert Straus, owner of Straus Family Dairy, who will talk about the essence of the land and its critical role in supporting sustainable dairy farms. The program will include visits to Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station to see the cheesemaking process and to our shop at the Ferry Plaza in San Francisco.

Passion As a Business
The notion of pursuing your passion and creating a livelihood is an unfulfilled dream for many people. But it does happen and the stories behind these personal journeys reveal the many different paths that people take.

This month, Cowgirl Creamery co-founder Sue Conley will be heading down to New Orleans to share her story at the annual conference for the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP).  Sue will be participating in a panel with Joanne Clevinger of Upperline Restaurant and Eliza Macleamen, from Cane Creek Farm, titled “Building a business out of your Passion”. The moderator, Fran McCullough views the three panelists as preservationists of agricultural land, heritage farm animal breeds and culinary traditions.  For Sue and Peggy, the fabrication, promotion and distribution of unique hand crafted cheeses provides a marketing base for small cheesemakers and dairy operations.  This support helps farmers to prosper, thereby preserving agricultural lands and farming as a way of life.

Cheese Library
As our customers try new cheeses, they are often interested in learning a bit more about the cheese and the personal journeys of the people who make them. We developed our online Library of Cheese for that very purpose.  Over the past year we have added more cheeses to the Library and we are in the process of adding a PDF file for each cheese so that you can print out the Library description for reference. The Library is an ever-changing work in progress, which is continuously updated. Please let us know if you have additions or corrections to our Library entries.
